La Serenidad’s blog is officially starting. Blog post content can be of a wide variety of subjects which (most of the time) will tie back to mental health. If there are any topics that you would like us to blog about please leave a comment and we will see what it possible. La Serenidad was an idea I thought of in August of 2015. At that time, I was starting my social work master’s program having absolutely no idea where this ride was going to take me. I can say that becoming a therapist has been the single best thing I have ever done – hands down! The funniest part of all of this is that becoming a therapist was never on my radar whatsoever.
My social work professor, Deb Bowen, said, “You don’t choose social work. Social work chooses you!” Not sure how other social workers feel about those words, but I can say they definitely apply to me. Like many LGBTQ+ community members coming out of high school I carried with me my trusty supply of internalized homophobia. Long story short – that supply lasted a long time and led to alcoholism and drug addiction. It is this life experience that had social work choosing me. If there is one thing that alcoholism and drug addiction can do it is break you down to a point where you become teachable.
I truly love this profession. There is an intangible “payoff” in helping a person get past a barrier that has kept them from a better quality of life – and being part of that doesn’t suck!
